Children in the early years
The early years
The early years are the first few years of a child's life, from birth to the age of six. The early years are a time of wonder and excitement, when a child discovers the world around them for the first time.
During the first three years a child's brain develops very quickly, with lots of new 'links' being made. The shape of the brain and the links it makes are strongly influenced by a child's experiences and their relationships with the people who look after them.
The single most important influence on a child's life is the quality of their relationships with parents and caregivers. Understanding what is happening to children as they grow often helps parents to be more patient with them, and when a child feels loved and protected, they get the best start in life.
What do children need to help them grow and learn in the early years?
- Loving relationships with adults who can guide them and protect them from harm.
- Adults who show acceptable behaviour, and set clear boundaries for the child.
- Adults who actively encourage a child's curiosity and sense of creativity.
- Freedom to play and explore, to make mistakes and to figure things out.
- Healthy nutritious food, physical exercise and contact with nature.
- A home rich with language, stories and celebrations.
- A sense of belonging to family and the community.
- Access to quality early childhood education and care programs that work closely with parents and families.
